Self Help Ways to Help Ease Symptoms

Dietary measures can help:

  • Ensure you eat regular meals and provide yourself plenty of time to eat and not rush.
  • Ensure you take plenty of liquids especially water and avoid alcohol and fizzy drinks.
  • Depending on your symptoms it may helps to reduce or increase your fibre intake. Soluble fibres that are easy to digest include fruits, bananas, or apples.
  • Aim to reduce the amount of processed food that you eat.
  • With diarrhoea, you may cut our artificial sweeteners.
  • Probiotics are also useful as they contain helpful bacteria and yeasts.
  • Reducing the amount of certain sugars in your diet may help your symptoms. Your nutritionist can help you in this way.

Keep a food diary to see if certain foods trigger your symptoms.

Lifestyle Help

Regular exercise is a great way to help reduce your symptoms. Aim to do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily.  If you find that your stress triggers your IBS, it maybe helpful to learn to relax.

Talk to other people in a similar situation to you. There are plenty of charities that help support people with IBS and this maybe useful to you. These include

With a little effort and small steps to change your lifestyle, you may be able to make a significant difference to easing your symptoms and gaining IBS relief.
